Dries Mertens breaks Maradona Napoli record

With a brace in a 3-2 win versus Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, Napoli forward Dries Mertens surpassed Diego Maradona’s 115 goals for the club, taking his tally to 116.

The Belgian arrived in Naples during summer 2013, and has since made 292 appearances for the Partenopei, adding 69 assists to the 116 goals fired in so far.

Mertens now only has to score six more times to become the club’s all-time top scorer, surpassing the current number one Marek Hamsik, who recorded 121 strikes in 520 appearances during his time at Napoli.
