Italian FA proposal could see next season’s Serie A shortened and split into groups, with a playoff tournament for the title

La Repubblica report today that Italian FA chief Gabriele Gravina is looking into establishing a new format for the upcoming Serie A season. With the 2020/21 season set to start in late September, changes to the competition could be made to accomodate next summer’s European Championships, with Roberto Mancini’s side a dark horse for the postponed tournament.

Gravina’s proposal would involve splitting up Serie A into separate divisions – potentially 4 groups of 5 or 2 groups of 10, with the top 12 clubs going on to a playoff for the Scudetto, at the bottom 8 doing likewise to determine the relegated teams. This would make up for the lack of time to play out 38 matchdays.
