Serie A March salaries to be left unpaid

La Repubblica report today that following a meeting between representatives from Serie A clubs, a statement has been made to the Italian FA, notifying them that this months’ player earnings would not be paid out. The suspension of football in the country as a result of the spread of COVID-19 has meant financial losses for the league’s twenty clubs, which would be recouped by withholding players’ salaries for the month of March.

In the worst case scenario, players’ salaries could be cut by up to 30% in the future should the season not start again before the summer. The president of the Players’ Association, Damiano Tommasi, was dismissive of such measures: “We can’t impose potential salary cuts on players. We can put out guidelines, but wage cuts should be decided by the individuals.”
