Roma ‘resume contact’ for AZ midfielder Teun Koopmeiners after Xhaka impasse

Jose Mourinho’s Roma have reportedly resumed their contact for AZ Alkmaar midfielder Teun Koopemeiners, with the Giallorossi yet to find an agreement with Arsenal for Granit Xhaka.

La Gazzetta dello Sport today have provided some key details about Roma’s situation in midfield, saying that since the club could be set to play a UEFA Conference League in just over two weeks and an agreement for Xhaka is yet to be struck, Tiago Pinto has resumed contact with Koopmeiners’ entourage.

The Dutchman was already on the club’s shortlist earlier in the transfer window but they are looking to go back for him again.

Roma’s midfield situation is said to be ‘alarming’, with Gonzalo Villar injured, Jordan Veretout having undergone just one training session, Ebrima Darboe yet to gel in to the side this season and Amadou Diawara not considered a key part of the side. Bryan Cristante is Roma’s only available midfield option and they’re now looking to strengthen their midfield.

Koopmeiners could cost 20 million but he is only 23 and that could allow Roma a better option to ammortise the deal. His age is why Roma consider him to be a better option than Thomas Delaney and Douglas Luiz, with the Aston Villa midfielder expected to cost a lot more.
