Conte on Tottenham’s January business: “On paper, we weakened.”

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte believes that instead of strengthening in the January transfer window, the Lilywhites weakened.

Spurs signed Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus in January while letting go of Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani lo Celso, Dele Alli and Bryan Gil. Conte spoke to Sky Italia in an interview and he gave his views about the business in January from Spurs.

He said: “It is always difficult to make comparisons, but surely when you take the job in a team that hasn’t won for a long time it is inevitable that you will lack confidence.”

“I looked at situations that could have developed then when you enter the situation you understand something. What happened in January is not easy. Four players left in January. Four important players for Tottenham, two have arrived. So even numerically instead of strengthening you may have, on paper, weakened. Bentancur and Kulusevski are the ideal prospect for Tottenham. Because Tottenham is looking for young players, players to be developed, not ready players.”

He further stated: “The vision, the philosophy of the club is this. It is inevitable that if you want to grow faster and if you want to be competitive more quickly you need players with a lot of experience because then they also lead to increase the experience in your team. But then again, the vision of the club, as I understand is this.”

Spurs have lost their last two games against Southampton and Wolves and weeks after being favourites for the top four, they are now at eighth and are seven points behind fourth-placed Man Utd while having 3 games in hand.
