Dries Mertens edges close to Napoli contract after taking wage cut

Dries Mertensโ€™ decision to take a wage cut means that he is now close to signing a new deal with Napoli.

It was reported some weeks ago that the Partenopei were close to losing Mertens after contract talks had not worked out. But it seems like a U-turn has been made.

Il Mattino claim that Mertens is now edging close to signing a new Napoli contract and he is ready to take a wage cut of โ‚ฌ2 million to do that. The Belgian had initially asked for a wage packet of an assured sum of โ‚ฌ2 million plus bonuses of a further โ‚ฌ2 million.

But that demand exceeded what Napoli could pay in the new deal, as they are looking to cut costs on wages. But Mertensโ€™ willingness to reduce his demand has been decisive and parties are now close to finding an agreement. He is willing to halve his demands from what they were about a month ago and sign a new deal.
