Javier Zanetti on Lautaro Martinez: “When you need him the most, he shows up”

Ahead of Argentina’s semi-final clash against Croatia within the 2022 World Cup, Inter president and club-legend Javier Zanetti heavily praised Lautaro Martinez in an interview.

So far this season, the 25 year-old talisman has been on an impressive run of form, amassing seven goals and three assists across 15 games played within the Serie A for the Nerazzurri.

Martinez has improved tremendously, proving that he can be clinical within the final third on a fairly consistent basis without the need of a link-up striker to create space for him when in the goal-scoring phase.

However, the Argentine failed to carry over his ground breaking form to the World Cup, failing to score a single goal within open-play thus far.

After converting the game-winning penalty shot against the Netherlands to seal their spot within the final four of the international tournament, Zanetti provided his insight on Lautaro Martinez as a player while speaking to the media, as relayed by La Gazzetta dello Sport:

“Without a doubt he is a decisive player. When you need him the most, he shows up,” He had the hardest time because that penalty weighed a lot and he converted it because he’s a great player, with a lot of personality.”
