Manchester United were expected to make a higher bid for Marko Arnautović

Marko Arnautović wanted to join Manchester United from Bologna this summer. But the recent developments have seen the Premier League club withdrawing from the striker’s pursuit.

While elaborating on the background of the short-lived Arnautović saga, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed that Manchester United had intended to present an improved bid for Marko Arnautović later in the week. He also confirmed that the amount of the reported offer would have been around €13-€14 million.

But, with scores of fans sending emails to the club chiefs in protest against the former Stoke City marksman and threatening them to cancel their season tickets, the Mancunian side was forced to withdraw their interest. As confirmed by Romano, the club will not discuss a move for the 33-year-old Austrian as “it’s 100% over”.

Prior to the collapse of the deal, several reports in Italy had already suggested that Bologna would be keen on keeping the forward. The Bologna management sees him as a pivotal figure in Siniša Mihajlović’s project. After signing for the Italian club last summer, the striker scored 14 goals from 33 Serie A appearances in the 2021/22 season.
