Mathías Olivera explains Edinson Cavani’s role behind his transfer to Napoli

Napoli had a fascinating transfer window last summer. As part of their summer recruitment strategy, they signed full-back Mathías Olivera from Getafe for a transfer fee of €11 million, which has started to look like a bargain, given the quality of the Uruguay international.

In an interview with Radio Kiss Kiss (via Alfredopedulla.com), the 24-year-old broadly discussed his summer transfer to the Italian club, admitting how Edinson Cavani convinced him to move to Naples by telling him about the history of the club and the culture around the city. Olivera said:

“In a friendly match (for Uruguay), I chatted with Cavani who told me things about the city, the club and the team. Since I arrived (in Napoli), I have talked less with him (Cavani). The chats with him helped me a lot.”

Since moving to the Serie A club, the left-back has made eight league appearances, having scored one goal thus far. In the Champions League, he has played more minutes and has added two assists to his name. Since the start of the season, Napoli have not lost a game of football in any competition yet. Luciano Spalletti’s side is now considered one of the favourites to lift the Scudetto this season.
