OFFICIAL | Spezia sign Ethan Ampadu from Chelsea

Serie A side Spezia have now signed Ethan Ampadu from Chelsea on deadline day.

Ampadu had spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Venezia and while he did well during the campaign, Paolo Zanetti’s former side got relegated to Serie B.

The Welshman has now returned to Serie A, with Spezia having signed the versatile defender on an initial loan deal. While Empoli were previously said to be leading the race for the Wales international, Spezia are now signing him and have the option to buy him permanently for €15 million next summer.

The 21-year-old played 29 Serie A games last season and racked up three assists. While he mainly played in defensive midfield, Ampadu also played at centre-back and also slotted in at right-back sometimes. He constantly showed his versatility throughout the campaign.

He has previously spent loan stints at Sheffield United and RB Leipzig, having joined Chelsea from Exeter City in 2017.
