Serie A 2022/23 | MATCH REPORT: Sassuolo 1-2 Inter

Inter survived another scare in Serie A as a brace from Edin Džeko put Simone Inzaghi’s men back to the winning ways.

Sassuolo hosted the Nerazzurri in the opening match of the ninth round of 2022/23 Serie A fixtures. The home side had an early chance to score, but Džeko broke the deadlock with a right-footed finish just before the end of the first half, with Denzel Dumfries pocketing the assist.

The hosts hit back in the 60th minute of the match as Davide Frattesi scored the equaliser off Rogério’s delivery from the left. Despite playing and winning a gruelling match against Barcelona in the Champions League in midweek, Inzaghi’s men looked more energetic than the Neroverdi players.

Coming on as a substitute at half-time, Henrikh Mkhitaryan triggered the most crucial chance of the match for the visitors in the 60th minute. A cross from the left was perfectly picked by Džeko, who collected a brace and simultaneously notched up his 101st goal in Serie A.

In the hour of need, Sassuolo fell short of ideas in the attacking half as they looked lethargic in the final minutes of the game. Overcoming the two consecutive defeats, Inter earned three points. While it is true that it was far from a comfortable affair for Inter, Inzaghi would cherish these three points.
