Tottenham made summer attempt for Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo

Premier League side Tottenham had made an attempt to sign Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo in the summer transfer window.

Spurs were linked with a move for Zaniolo in the summer and so were Juventus, who were said to have backed away due to the Giallorossi’s demands.

Gianluca di Marzio, during a chat with Wettfreunde, has revealed that Spurs were the only club that tried to sign Zaniolo but their attempts had failed. He also revealed that there is a possibility of Spurs returning to chase the Italy international once again because of Fabio Paratici’s liking for the player.

The journalist stated: “Nicolo Zaniolo only had one real approach in the summer and that was from Tottenham. Tottenham tried to get him but with a swap deal with other players or a loan option and Roma didn’t want to sell the player under those conditions.”

The journalist also revealed that there is no chance that Arsenal go for him, despite a delicate contract situation: “Like Rafael Leão and Milan Škriniar, it’s about Zaniolo’s contract. It depends on whether or not Roma will renew Zaniolo’s contract because his contract expires in a year and a half so they need to renew his contract if they want the contractual power if the player makes a request. Arsenal or other clubs? No.”

Di Marzio did reveal though, that one can’t rule out Spurs moving for the forward once again at some point in the future.

“Only Tottenham can come back because Tottenham sporting director Fabio Paratici is one of the sporting directors who has wanted Zaniolo for a long time – even when he was at Juventus.”

Zaniolo did feature for Roma against Sampdoria yesterday but despite a couple of very good chances, he couldn’t find the back of the net.
