Inter boss Simone Inzaghi following Lazio win: “We had one of the best matches of the 20 months I’ve been here”

Following the Nerrazzurri’s impeccable 3-1 comeback victory against Lazio, Inter boss Simone Inzaghi provided his insight on the fixture against his former club in a post-match interview.

A poor giveaway from former Biancocelesti skipper Francesco Acerbi paved the way for Luis Alberto and Felipe Anderson to combine and fire past Inter shot-stopper Andre Onana within the half-hour mark.

Despite the daunting end to the first half, Inzaghi’s side managed to turn the scoreline as the gaffer made a flurry of substitutions, bringing on Argentine Lautaro Martinez, wing-back Robin Gosens, and central midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu as an attempt to shift the tide of momentum.

The 24 year-old marksman made his mark on the match imminently as he found the equalizer through sliding effort followed by an exquisite lay-off from Lukaku to make it all level in the 77th minute of play.

With minimal time remaining, Lukaku distributed a fine cross towards the second post, which was connected brilliantly by Gosens who fired the ball across the second post with an acrobatic stunt in order to hand Inter the lead.

In the 90th minute of play, Martinez dazzled past Ivan Porvedel and gently guided the ball past the line to secure all three points against Lazio within Milanese soil.

As it stands, Inzaghi’s side has regained their spot in the top four as they sit in fourth with 57 points, on level terms with cross-city rivals Milan and Roma.

They’re vengeance on Lazio following the reverse fixture early on within the season which ended 3-1 for the capital club at the Stadio Olimpico caused Inter to overcome their three match consecutive losing streak at home within the league.

While speaking to Sky Sport Italia, via Tuttomercatoweb, Inzaghi provided his insight on the significance of the win and his thoughts on Lukaku and Lautaro’s display within the front-line:

“We had one of the best matches of the 20 months I’ve been here. At half-time I told my players not to give up, we were coming from an intense Wednesday and we’re playing against the second in the standings, a very strong and quality team,” commenced Inzaghi.

What has changed in the head?

“It was a very important match for us, this is a great result and I got good signals from who started and who took over. Lukaku played better with Lautaro. At the end of the first half, I complimented the team, we were undeservedly down. We had to stay focused and not lose our distance. We won a vital game, we’re still late but that’s okay.”

How is Gosens?

“He had a dislocated shoulder, let’s hope we don’t lose him, he’s been doing great things since January, together with Dimarco. He must continue like this, I hope he doesn’t have to stop because we need everyone. I’m alternating many players, the period is very, very demanding “.

What was Inter’s problem in this championship?

“We’re having an exciting season, we know that we’ve lost some important points in the league but we’ve played top-level European games. I’m satisfied with what we’ve done this year and the latest performances give me a lot of confidence. We’ll always do our best.”
