Opinion | Why Napoli destroyed Juventus

Last night Napoli put a sorry Juventus side to the sword, in a victory which will reign long in the minds of Calcio fans worldwide. The win will go down in the history books as the perfect example of this simply incredible Napoli side, led by the wonderful Luciano Spalletti.

The performance from I Partenopei, showcased Napoli at their scintillating best, with their attacking prowess and tactical mastery proving too much for a fragile Juventus defence, which was left surrendering.

The key factor in Napoli’s demolition of Vecchia Signora, was the high press of Napoli, the front six worked tirelessly to consistently disrupt the plans of Max Allegri, not allowing Juventus to play out from the back, forcing mistakes which were capitalised on by the lethal attacking duo of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and the wonderful Victor Osimhen who has only improved his goal record which was analysed yesterday by GIFN.

The two caused absolute carnage, with both playing a crucial part in four of the five goals scored, Osimhen scoring two with one assist while Kvara scored one and assisted two, in what was an incredible display from one of Europes deadliest duo’s.

Napoli were dominant, holding 60% of possession, which kept Juventus penned into their own half, and the high press which followed after they lost possession made it difficult for Juventus.

FBRef revealed, Napoli had an xG of 2.1 compared to Juventus’ xG of 1.2, and Juventus had only two shots on target from their 11 in total, and against this Napoli side that is impossible to do as they will punish you. This is exactly what happened.

Napoli’s win has put them 10 points clear at the top of the table and the champions elect seem destined to lift the Scudetto sooner than later. Should they win the league, this night will be among those remembered most fondly in Naples for years to come.
