Serie A side Salernitana are hunting for a new manager to replace Paulo Sousa and have now made contact for Rafael Benitez, even though Andrea Pirlo remains the leading candidate for the role.
TuttoSalernitana report that Salernitana will soon meet with four or five coaches that are on their shortlist. Regardless of whether Sousa becomes the next Napoli boss or not, he could yet leave the club after the disturbance his situation caused at the club.
In the last few hours, Pirlo’s candidacy has become quite prominent and Rino Gattuso also remains a background option for the Salerno-based club. The ideas involving Daniele de Rossi and Francesco Farioli haven’t quite taken off. But recently, the club has made contact for Benitez.
Benitez would be appealed by the idea of returning to Italy and Salernitana know that it will not be an easy coup, but they are still trying. Benitez is taking some days to reflect on the opportunity and it remains to be seen what happens.
