David de Gea on football inactivity: โ€œIt was difficult for me to find motivation after Man Utdโ€

Former Manchester United goalkeeper and new Fiorentina signing David de Gea has spoken up about his inactivity from the game, as he speaks to the press after his signature.

De Gea was also offered to Genoa but they didnโ€™t move for him. Fiorentina were keen on him and the Spaniard has now joined on an initial one-year deal.

De Gea spoke to the press after his signing and he was asked about his time away from the sport for 14 months. He revealed his love for United and how difficult things were.

โ€œItโ€™s true I havenโ€™t played but I havenโ€™t been idle: I trained because I knew I would return one day. I trained hard even if aloneโ€ฆ I never thought of retiring: I played 12 years in a very important club like United and my heart will always be there. However, it was difficult for me to find the motivation to face a new adventure.โ€

He also revealed that he had multiple offers but his entourage spoke to Daniele Prade, leading to the completion of the move.

โ€œI had many offersโ€ฆ but I wanted to play in Serie A. Fiorentina got in touch with Alessandro Ferrari and Daniele Pradรจ and from that moment the negotiations were very fast. I always thought that Fiorentina was the best possible destination.โ€

The Spaniard was also asked about Fiorentinaโ€™s goal of winning a European trophy this season, after losing the Conference League final twice.

โ€œIn Spain they say that usually the third time is the right time, after two lost finalsโ€ฆ but I wouldnโ€™t look too far aheadโ€ฆ I would think about Parma, hoping then in the long run to win some trophies. You have to aspire to the maximum knowing that it will be very difficult.โ€
