Napoli abandon pursuit for central defender; will resume hunt in summer transfer window.

Following the collapse of Udinese’s central defender Nehuen Perez’s transfer to the Partenopei, Napoli have decided to abandon their pursuit for a central defender in the winter transfer-market.

The deal was on the verge of reaching completion as the Azzurri reached an agreement with the Zebrette regarding a permanent transfer around the region of €18m, but Udinese’s ideal alternative Matteo Lovato has decided to depart Salernitana for Torino instead, causing the transfer to reach a complete stalemate.

La Reppublica reports, via CalcioNapoli24, that coach Walter Mazzarri’s side have decided to put an end to their search for defender for the second half of the 2023/24 term, as they will keep 24-year-old Leo Ostigard as an option in the defensive department of the squad.

However, the Partenopei will make the central defender role the focal point of their summer transfer window, as they will relaunch negotiations with Perez and will keep their tabs open for 23 year-old Stade Rennes defender Arthur Theate.
