The numbers behind Napoliโ€™s fall from grace this season

Napoli are facing a deep crisis this season and their state now is in stark contrast to their last seasonโ€™s performances. Club president Aurelio De Laurentiis transitioned from the Scudetto-winning Luciano Spalletti to Rudi Garcia to current manager Walter Mazzarri but nothing has been convincing till now.

The numbers behind the Partenopeiโ€™s fall speak for themselves as their league title defence is virtually over and they now stand to lose on a top-four spot. The 3-0 defeat to Torino rubbed salt on their wounds as they fell to ninth in the league standings, 20 points short of leaders Inter.ย

Sky Italia highlights the statistics that show the difference between last seasonโ€™s and the current Napoli team at the campaignโ€™s halfway point. During the 2022/23 season, the Neapolitans had secured 50 points and were already coined the clear favourites to become the champions whereas, in this one, they have only scraped 28 points to stay afloat in the top 10.ย

Luciano Spallettiโ€™s side had scored a staggering 48 goals at this point last season thanks to the contributions of breakout star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Victor Osimhen. However, the goal count has fallen drastically as Napoli have been able to net just 28. The defensive record is quite unfortunate too as a side which only conceded 14 last campaign has the worst defence till now amongst the top 10.ย

16 victories were already under the bag during halfway with the current Italy manager in charge but the combination of Rudi Garcia and Walter Mazzarri has managed to get only 8. At this point last season, the side had lost only once and by now, they have lost as many as seven games.

Whether it is a case of mismanagement or lack of unified performances from the team, Napoli are in serious trouble as fans are unhappy and the club will now be in retreat. Whether the form improves or not remains to be seen, but the fall from grace has been disturbing.
