Serie A side Roma couldnโt do much on deadline day in the summer transfer window and this had attracted speculation from Corriere dello Sport about Gian Piero Gasperini not being entirely happy with sporting director Ricky Massara.
The newspaper reported that the manager was promised signings that would elevate the level of the squad but that hasnโt quite happened.
In Romaโs press conference today, the Italian boss was asked about his relationship with the club and with Massara. He made it clear that everyone has been open about things from their end, calling for synery between everyone.
He said, via Gazzetta: โWe have always had a shared vision with the club. We havenโt been able to achieve everything, but weโve been very open to help on all fronts.โ
When specifically asked about his relationship with Massara, Gasperini said: โRumors of tension with Massara? We have two different jobs; I understand the transfer market difficulties and the strategies for when to push or when to bluff. I donโt participate in negotiations because thatโs not my job, but there needs to be synergy between the coach, the owner, and the sporting director. I must say that the clubโs presence has been greater than in recent years, and thatโs crucial for me.โ
The manager was also asked about why Roma chose not to sign unproven players and only wanted established players, especially on deadline day.
He said: โAs often happens, the final hours of the transfer window are always the most difficult ones, where perhaps all the clubs try to solve the problem in a few hours what canโt be done in many weeks.โ
โRoma still had the desire and, if you like, the need to make some deals. However, as far as Iโm concerned, even with a club that was very willing, even financially, to endorse deals, last-minute deals wouldnโt have resulted in a technical advantage or a significant financial outlay. At that point, the club will be able to do so more calmly and successfully in the next January transfer window. The difficulties of Financial Fair Play have had an impact.โ
The Giallorossi had tried to sign Matteo Pessina late in the window but the move depended on Tomasso Baldanzi. But the youngsterโs move to Hellas Verona didnโt go through, making sure that Pessina stayed at Monza.
