Ex-Referee on Milan offside call v Napoli: “I was quite surprised.”

Former referee Luca Marelli has been left surprised by the decision to disallow Franck Kessie’s late goal against Napoli for Milan.

Eljif Elmas had scored early through a header for Napoli but in a game with few clear cut chances, Kessie did score in the 90th minute. But the goal was disallowed as Olivier Giroud, who was on the ground, was offside even though he didn’t touch the ball.

Marelli told DAZN: “I am quite surprised by this decision, certainly Giroud is offside on Kalulu’s touch but I struggle to see a punishable offside. To be offside, he had to move towards the ball, but he was on the ground and I don’t know what he had to do honestly.”

The 1-0 win took Napoli to second in the league and they are four points behind Inter, while Milan are level on points with the Partenopei.
