Angel di Maria committed to Barcelona before joining Juventus

Angel Di Maria has been Juventus’ hero, providing the club with qualification to Europa League’s last 16 with a hat trick against Nantes but this season, he could have played with another club as he had committed to Barcelona.

Spanish outlet Relevo reports that El Fideo had Barcelona as his first choice since he understood that PSG had no intention to extend his contract last June and that he would have become a free agent.

He had various talks with coach Xavi and he verbally committed himself to the Blaugrana but the club never sealed the deal and so he decided to join Juventus.

Di Maria signed a one-year contract with Juventus for a salary reported to be around €7 million. He will be a free agent at the end of the season and so far there have been no reports about a potential extension.

Gianluca Pessotto, member of Juventus’ board, after the Europa League’s draw told Sky Sport that he wishes Di Maria could stay with The Bianconeri by signing a new contract.

Di Maria, 35, has stated many times that his dream is to finish his career in his hometown club in Argentina, Rosario Central.

He signed with Juventus in 2021 as he planned to play one more season in Europe in order to prepare himself for the World Cup that he then went on winning with Argentina scoring one goal in the finale against France.
