Serie A Italian football is known for its ability to spawn some of the most formidable players of all time. Even those who are not a fan of this league cannot deny the impact that such personalities have had upon the sport as a whole. Let us briefly examine a handful of the top all-time Serie A scorers as well as what each brought onto the pitch during his tenure.
Roberto Baggio
Roberto Baggio, a fixture in Serie A from 1984 to 2004, played for six teams and scored an impressive 205 goals during his illustrious career. His elegant style on the field earned him the nickname โIl Divin Codinoโ (The Divine Ponytail) due to his distinctive long hair. Baggioโs unique combination of skill, vision, and flair made him not only a prolific goal scorer but also a captivating and beloved figure in the world of football
Giuseppe Signori
Signori was one of the top forwards to have ever played in Serie A Italian football. In fact, he was able to walk away with no fewer than 188 goals before his eventual retirement in 2006. Signori played for Foggia, Sampdoria, Bologna, and Lazio. He was particularly prolific while wearing a Lazio jersey, as he scored 107 goals out of 152 appearances.
Gunnar Nordahl
While not Italian, Gunnar Nordahl certainly had an impact upon Italian football. Nordahl was considered to be the topย Seria A goal scorerย between 1942 and 1948, racking up 43 goals during this interval. Nordahl would retire with a total of 210 goals. Sometimes known as โThe Firemanโ, Nordahl is still the only player who has scored the most goals for AC Milan (221).
Giuseppe Meazza
Meazza is still one of the most revered Serie A players due in large part to his stint at Internazionale Milano. During this time, he scored an impressive 197 goals. However, Meazza was also a formidable force on the pitch when signed with Milan and Juventus. He would end his career with a total of 216 goals; placing him just behind Gunnar Nordahl in terms of scoring statistics.
Francesco Totti
Anyone who is even vaguely familiar with Serie A football has likely heard of Francesco Totti. He is still thought to be one of the best players of his generation and as he only retired in 2017, Totti features prominently within many football circles. However, the fact that he was able to score an incredible 250 goals for Roma throughout his career is by far his most well-known attribute. Thanks to his outstanding performance, Totti was recognised with several accolades including the 2010 Golden Foot, the 2007 European Golden Shoe and the UEFA Playerโs Career Award.
Silvio Piola
Silvio Piola has come to defineย Serie A football. Boasting a career that spanned from 1929 to 1954, Piola accumulated a total of 274 goals, with 143ย scored during his time with Lazio FC. In addition to his tenure with Serie A, he scored an additional 16 goals when playing in the Divisione Nazionale. His legacy lives on in the Italian Football Hall of Fame and two stadiums (in Novara and Vercelli) currently bear his name. These six personalities represent the pinnacle of Serie A football. While no longer on the pitch, there is little doubt that their legacy will live on through entirely new generations of fans.
