Jose Mourinho ahead of Salernitana match: “Since we lost Abraham, we have done nothing to compensate for this situation”

Ahead of the Giallorossi’s opening match of the season against Salernitana tomorrow evening, Roma coach Jose Mourinho provided his insight on the fixture as well as the club’s situation with the transfer market within the press conference this afternoon.

The capital club have done well to acquire pair of central defenders Rasmus Kristensun and Evan N’Dicka, as well as central midfielders Renato Sanches and Leandro Paredes.

However, Roma have failed to find a striker in order to fill the void within the squad after Tammy Abraham having suffered a long-term injury last season, leaving Mourinho with only Alessandro Belotti at his disposal up-top.

Roma in a full-fledged pursuit for Santos striker Marcos Leonardo, but the Brazilian side have ultimately decided not to let him go after constantly raising his price-tag despites the youngsters desire to part ways with the club.

Meanwhile, the Giallorossi have identified Duvan Zapata as an alternative, but Mourinho’s side find themselves far in reaching an agreement with Atalanta for the Columbian forward.

With Mourinho entering the first game with only a sole pure striker availaible, the Portuguese tactician provided his perspective of the situation, as relayed by ForzaRoma:

“We worked well, very well. We practically arrive with 40 days of work where all the players have done 100% of the work or almost. We have had very few problems, not even those that usually occur in the pre-season. No one will be out tomorrow with an injury. We have two important players out due to suspension, but we are arriving in good condition. I thank all the staff and all the players because we have worked very well in this period. We have improved in various aspects of our game. Paredes and Renato Sanches will help us because they have quality but they must know our principles and dynamics.

“The striker? We know. Coming here and crying is not worth it. We all know that since we lost Abraham, we have done nothing to compensate for this situation. The club is doing everything possible to resolve the issue but I train the players who are available. I ask our fans once more to play as forwards tomorrow, we need them. We also have two key players for us who are out.The fans can help us perfectly. The stadium is full and it will be incredibly hot. There are those who are angry about the flag issue, but I say “let’s go” because we need everyone from the start. I trust the boys despite the difficulties.”

In addition, the gaffer gave his input on Salernitana as opponents heading into tomorrow’s match:

“They have an excellent coach and a highly experienced squad. Last year they had a lot of positive results, they didn’t win much but they lost very few times. I expect a difficult match like everyone else in Serie A. Repeating that Pellegrini and Dybala are missing would be repeating something we know. The world of football sometimes amazes me because we are still so many years behind. Starting a competition where the goal is to get as high as possible, and have players suspended for last season’s yellows, is old-fashioned. I would have understood that for an expulsion. There are many players who will miss the first match for yellow cards and it seems out of fashion to me, but that’s how it is.”
