Lazio set to fail in move for Feyenoord’s Mats Wieffer

Sky Italia have reported today that the deal between Lazio and Feyenoord for the transfer of Mats Wieffer has collapsed. Feyenoord have no intention of giving up Wieffer. Lazio had decided in the last few days to offer €15 million, in addition to the inclusion of a player in the negotiation, but the final decision of Feyenoord is not to give him up.

The Dutch club consider the midfielder to be too important and plan to keep him as an important player for years to come. At 23 years old, and only joining a year ago, Wieffer still has a lot to offer Feyenoord. He made 25 league appearances last season, with 18 starts. It was a strong debut from the Dutchman, and he played the majority of games as a defensive midfielder, as well as a few games in central midfield.

Lazio will be disappointed to miss out on an important midfield target. Maurizio Sarri needs to bolster his midfield with potential starters, as it is looking sparse going into the new season. Lazio sold Sergej Milinković-Savić earlier in the window, and have not yet signed a replacement near the same calibre.
