Fabio Capello slams Maurizio Sarri’s tactics after Lazio’s Champions League exit

Veteran Italian football manager Fabio Capello has slammed Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri’s tactics and setup in the club’s 3-0 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

The Roman side had won the first leg rather deservedly but they came out as the second-best side in Munich. Bayern scored three unanswered goals, with Harry Kane grabbing a brace and Thomas Muller grabbing one in the stoppage time of the first half, as the Bavarians picked up a 3-1 win on aggregate.

After the game, Capello spoke to SKy (via TMW) and slammed Sarri for sticking with the 4-3-3 shape, with the Italian having faced criticism for the shape.

“You prepare for a match, you think you’re playing in a certain way, but you cant  always play with the same system when that system allows the opponents to do what they want. If the 4-3-3 doesn’t go well, change the formation. And then in Italy we are not used to this rhythm, we are not used to this speed of play. We need to improve from this point of view.”

Sarri has been criticised for his management at Lazio, amidst talk of a rift with CEO Claudio Lotito in recent weeks. His contract at the club runs out in the summer and the Champions League exit takes away their chance at progressing in Europe from the European competition, with chances of making it to it again slim considering their disappointing league form.
