Inter join Juventus in race for Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso

Inter are keen on joining Juventus in the race to acquire the services of Atletico Madrid central defender Mario Hermoso ahead of next season.

Milan-based journal La Gazzetta dello Sport, via FcInter1908, reports that the Nerazzurri view the Spanish defender as an ideal replacement for former Lazio defender Francesco Acerbi.

Currently, the former Biancocelsti skipper’s future with the Milanese beyond this season is covered with an overcast of doubt following the controversial altercation with Napoli’s Juan Jesus, as well as the fact that the veteran defender is 36-years-old, leaving him with very few years left in his career.

As it stands, the 28-year-old Spaniard’s contract with the La Liga giants is set to expire at the end of the 2023/24 campaign. Consequently, the Beneamata are intrigued in obtaining the services of Hermoso on a free transfer in order to reinforce the back-line ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Since joining the capital side from La Liga compatriots Espanyol, Hermoso has cemented himself as a pillar in coach Diego Simeone’s back-line, attaining 126 appearances over the past five seasons, playing an instrumental role in the Argentine’s title-winning campaign the 2020-21 domestic season

Despite the Bianconeri having shown a great deal of interest in Hermoso as they have been monitoring the well-documented center-back’s circumstances with the Spanish outfits, Inter are prepared to step up their pursuit as they perceive the Spanish international to be a great profile for coach Simone Inzaghi given his immense amount of experience at a top club, as well as under the lights of the UEFA Chmapions League.
