Roma boss Daniele De Rossi hails Romelu Lukaku after Salernitana win: “He is a champion and to see him fight for 90 minutes is fantastic.”

Daniele De Rossi, head coach of Serie A giants Roma, was this evening keen to reveal his appreciation for frontman Romelu Lukaku.

Roma, and De Rossi, are of course fresh off a much-needed three-point haul, late on Monday night.

After kicking the post-Mourinho era into gear by way of a 2-1 victory over Verona last time out, the Giallorossi repeated the trick this time round, on this occasion at the expense of Salernitana.

Paulo Dybala opened the scoring at the Stadio Arechi, before Lorenzo Pellegrini ensured that Grigoris Kastanos’ strike 20 minutes from time would prove to be little more than a consolation for the hosts.

And yet, speaking to the media post-match, it was not his side’s goalscorers whom the aforementioned Daniele De Rossi was most keen to single out for praise.

Instead, the former Italian international pointed to the selfless performance put forth by Romelu Lukaku as reason for celebration:

“In the first half he was the only one who gave us depth, but he was served little,” De Rossi began, as cited by Gianluca Di Marzio.

“He worked with the team and helped much more than in the match against Verona. He is a champion and to see him fight for 90 minutes is fantastic.”
