Roma owners were ‘tired’ of Jose Mourinho’s attitude

Jose Mourinho’s attitude is said to have been a key reason for why Roma parted ways with the manager.

The Giallorossi’s statement about Mourinho’s exit came yesterday and while the timing was abrupt, the very announcement was not, considering the club’s position in the table.

La Repubblica have added more details about what cost Mourinho his job. In the morning yesterday at Trigoria, the club’s owners Friedkins met Mourinho and they had a conversation about the situation. It had some frank words and they expressed what they really thought of each other.

The owners were disappointed by the club’s results this season but they were also tired of his attitude. They were not happy that he constantly created controversy, blamed referees and deflected blame. They were specifically disturbed by the aftermath of the Europa League final against Sevilla, as Mourinho had verbally attacked referee Anthony Taylor and there were accusations that the club hadn’t backed him in the act of criticising the officiating.

UEFA did apologise but Mourinho had done damage to his image and that has been described as a watershed moment. The Friedkins had given Mourinho an ultimatum in mid-December and had informed Mourinho that a change in trend is needed and Ryan Friedkin had even received complaints from players and he had been in touch with Daniele de Rossi before, having spoken about the the unlikely possibility of him managing.

The loss to Milan closed the chapter and apart from performances, Mourinho’s own actions also cost him the job.
