Why Christian Pulisic is Serie A’s Best Attacking Midfielder

When he first came over from Chelsea, there were plenty of reasons to doubt whether Christian Pulisic would be an instant hit with AC Milan. But the American international has been better than the Red and Blacks ever could have dreamed. He’s been nominated for Serie A’s Midfielder of the Year award along with Hakan Calhanoglu and Teun Koopmeiners. But there should be no doubt that Pulisic is more deserving of the award and has established himself as the top attacking midfielder in Italy’s top flight.

For Pulisic, the numbers speak for themselves. He’s scored 15 goals during his inaugural AC Milan season, including 12 in league play. Those 12 goals are second on the club behind only Oliver Giroud while his seven assists rank third on the team. Pundits like Fabio Caressa have called Pulisic the best new signing in Serie A from last summer.

But the thing that has made Pulisic so special during his inaugural Serie A season has been his versatility. It’s not just the goals he’s scored or the assists he’s tallied. Pulisic has also done the dirty work by contributing defensively when needed. He’s also proven that he can play multiple positions in the attacking band, filling a variety of roles for AC Milan based on what the squad needs, showcasing just how valuable he’s been in his first season.

Pulisic has played most of his games on the right wing, where he’s done most of his damage. But when Rafael Leao has been unavailable for AC Milan, Stefano Pioli hasn’t hesitated to switch Pulisic to the left side. Even in limited action on the left side, Pulisic had no trouble continuing to create chances and contribute to AC Milan’s tallies. In April, Pulisic was given the chance to play in the no. 10 position directly behind Giroud and scored six minutes into the match. That showed even more versatility while also allowing Milan to play with Leao and Samuel Chukwueze on the wings at the same time without taking Pulisic off the field.

The bottom line is that no matter where Pulisic has played this season, he’s excelled. He’s played right, left, and central and always found a way to score goals and create chances for his teammates. Pulisic has quickly developed chemistry with the likes of Girous and Leao, helping him to be worth even more than what his stats indicate. For a player who wasn’t guaranteed a starting spot when he arrived in Italy last summer, Pulisic has surpassed expectations in a big way.

Up next for Pulisic is the Copa America tournament this summer. With several big soccer tournaments this summer, many of the top online betting sites will offer betting markets on these tournaments, as well as other sports all around the world. Bettors just have to learn about the top sites and find one that best fits their needs.

If Pulisic can perform this summer anywhere close to the level he’s reached for AC Milan, the U.S. team should be in good shape. While talented midfielders like Calhanoglu and Koopmeiners have been recognized alongside him as some of the best midfielders in Serie A, Pulisic’s production, versatility, and the way that he’s taken the league by storm in his first year in Italy set him apart as the top attacking midfielder in Serie A.
