The interest from Sunderland in Lazio midfielder Mattéo Guendouzi is escalating, driven almost entirely by the English club’s manager, with the Roman club facing a difficult decision over a potential €30 million sale, according to a report from Alfredo Pedullà.
Sunderland Connection is Key
The deep connection between Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris and Guendouzi is the primary force behind the transfer speculation. Le Bris has a “great relationship” with the French midfielder, dating back to their shared time at Lorient. The manager had already requested that the wealthy Premier League club make an offer for Guendouzi last summer, but a deal was impossible then due to Lazio’s blocked transfer market activity.
Le Bris recently confirmed the continuing interest in a press conference, stating that while it is too early to talk market, “we are in contact with some players and Matteo is one of them.”
Lazio’s Position and High Price Tag
Despite Sunderland’s strong financial backing, Lazio is currently hesitant to sell, viewing Guendouzi as a “pillar” of the midfield. While the club’s financial situation suggests they may need to make a sale, Lazio’s demands would start at approximately €30 million.
The primary dilemma for the club is that ceding Guendouzi, even for a high fee, would further weaken a squad that has not been replenished in the last few months. This comes at a time when the team is already struggling with a series of injuries and facing organized fan protests over the summer market failure, making any move to sell a central player a significant risk.
