Gian Piero Gasperini after Roma’s win over Sassuolo: “I try to improve every player”

Gian Piero Gasperini was in a reflective but satisfied mood following Roma’s crucial 1-0 victory over Sassuolo, a win secured by a Paulo Dybala penalty that propelled the team back to the top of the league.

While praising the tactical approach that secured the three points, the manager emphasized his fundamental coaching philosophy: improving every individual player in his squad. “I work on everyone, I try to improve every player,” Gasperini stated after the match.

He said, via VoceGiallorossa: “We are making experiments during the games… We are looking for the best solutions. The fact that we play many games helps us: sometimes we don’t immediately get the results we want, but we get there.” He admitted that the attack has been “the least prolific department.”

Gasperini was highly satisfied with the team’s response following two difficult losses, noting that they “interpreted [the game] in the best way.”

The coach offered a deep tactical dive into how his side approached their opponents, specifically targeting the key man in the Sassuolo midfield. He praised the tactical shift involving Bryan Cristante, who was used to limit the influence of their opponent’s deep midfielder, eventually leading to the winning goal.

“Dybala is an attacker, an extraordinary player,” Gasperini said, dismissing any doubts about the Argentine’s role. “He is not exactly an offensive winger, he can play as a first striker, a second striker, or with two strikers like today.”

“There are no difficulties in fitting anyone in: you just have to try to make the most of the characteristics of each player.”

He also gave high praise to Cristante for his performance and versatility. “Cristante, I must say that Pašalić has scored more than 50 goals in that role in recent years, but Cristante had already done it before… He is a complete player, matured in every aspect, and is really giving a great hand to the team.”

Gasperini acknowledged that Sassuolo, despite their position, was a formidable opponent, but he was delighted with the three points that sent his side to the top of the table: “We won an important game.”
