Romaโs young star Matias Soule is adamant that his allegiance lies with Argentina ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The central issue is that Soule, while being excellent for Roma has not been called up by Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni yet and thus, it is extremely doubtful that he goes to the US next year with the defending champions.
However, the other part of it is that he is eligible to represent Italy through his ancestry. This has been spoken about by his agent previously and the Italian federation are interested as well. Adding the quality of Soule would be a big boost for Italy, given that they have struggled internationally and their qualification to the World Cup will depend on the playoffs now.
Soule however has been blunt. In an interview to SportMediaSet, he said, โPlay for Italy? No. Choosing Argentina is not up for debate. Iโm Argentinian and I want to play for my national team.โ
The attacker also stated that while not getting called up repeatedly was disappointing, he is trying to stay calm and believes that if he continues performing like he is for Roma, the call for the World Cup will come.
