Roma forward Matรญas Soulรฉ has given a defining statement on his international allegiance in an interview with Il Messaggero (via Alfredo Pedullร ), declaring that his heart is fully set on representing Argentina.
While he admits former Italy coach Luciano Spalletti once discussed his situation, Soulรฉ insists those contacts were limited and never swayed his focus.
He recalled: โTwo years ago I spoke with Spalletti and told him I want to play for Argentina โ that is my idea.โ
When asked if the FIGC ever recontacted him, he said: โNo, nothing happened afterward.โ He added: โObviously they never called me, but that has always been my idea. I want to play for Argentina. I understand itโs not easy because there are so many strong players. I have to keep doing my best for Roma and weโll see.โ
Soulรฉโs remarks position him firmly against the allure of switching to Italy, underscoring the clarity of his ambition despite outside speculation over dual nationality. Rather than entertain uncertainty, heโs drawing a line โ and it runs toward his Argentine roots.
His comments now close the door on further debate over his eligibility and preference. The message is unmistakable: Soulรฉ is focused only on La Albiceleste.
This comes after the versatile attackerโs agent had hinted at the possibility of him playing for Italy, having yet to play for Argentine despite multiple call-ups to the national team. Souleโs own words should confirm where his allegiances lie.
