Bayern Munich comment on Leon Goretzkaโ€™s January Milan U-turn with midfielder set for summer departure instead

Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund has ruled out a January departure for Leon Goretzka, although the midfielder has announced an imminent departure at the end of the season.

The powerful German midfielderโ€™s contract expires in June, and after considerable interest this winter, Milan may still be an option for the summer.

In the meantime, though, Freund announced, โ€œLeon feels very comfortable at this club and this team. Heโ€™s decided to stay here. Heโ€™s playing really well, heโ€™s at a very high level, so itโ€™s no surprise there have been requests, even concrete ones. Heโ€™s an important part of the team, he feels weโ€™re on the right path, that a lot is possible, and he wants to stay with us. Heโ€™s an important player.โ€

Milanโ€™s interest in the Bayern man came after the success of Luka Modricโ€™s move on contract expiry. The experienced Croatian turned out at San Siro after leaving Real Madrid for free, and the prospect of another high-profile free agent suited the Rossoneri.

However, considering the potential high wages and Modricโ€™s status in the team, as well as European interest from elsewhere, Goretzkaโ€™s move always seemed unlikely this window. Add in the prospect of Bayern reconnecting with the 67-cap Bochum native, at least until the summer, then Milanโ€™s status in the potential move becomes less and less important.

That said, Goretzka has announced that he will leave Bayern at the end of his current deal and eight successful years with the Bavarian giants. In a statement on Instagram, the 30-year-old said:ย

โ€œDear fans, the last few days have been more turbulent than expected. At the same time, theyโ€™ve brought clarity: As much as Iโ€™m honored by the interest from top international clubs, Iโ€™ve made a clear decision that I want to stay with FC Bayern until the end of the season. With a team thatโ€™s incredibly fun to be around, both on and off the pitch, and a coach who has molded our squad back into a true unit. I feel a deep commitment to this team and the club. Our shared goal is to be back at Marienplatz in May, celebrating the biggest titles together with YOU!

โ€œAt the same time, the club and I have decided, after good and constructive discussions, that our successful time together will come to an end this summer. As Iโ€™ve said before, itโ€™s also the right time for me to start a new chapter: as a footballer and as a person. But thereโ€™s still a lot to do before then. Letโ€™s all give it our all to achieve maximum success this season and at the World Cup with FC Bayern and the national team! Iโ€™m looking forward to it! Thank you for your support! 2026! ย Mia san Mia!โ€
