Brookefield Corporation, the Canadian alternative investment management company, has wholly acquired the US global asset management firm Oaktree, which owns FC Internazionale Milano.
This marks the culmination of a process that began back in September 2019, Brookefield announced its acquisition of 61.2% of Oaktree Capital Management’s business, well before Chinese retailer Suning took the loan that would eventually see it relinquish Inter to Oaktree.
What will become of Inter?
This will be the logical next question for every Nerazzurri fan, and the answer is: not much, at least not right away.
As clarified by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter will remain 99.6% under Oaktree’s control. Oaktree manages assets worth US$225 million, roughly a quarter compared to those of Brookefield (over US$1 trillion), and acquisitions of this kind are commonplace in their line of work.
Oaktree founders Bruce Karsh, Howard Marks, and Sheldon Stone, no strangers to the Inter fan base, will be part of Brookefield’s board of directors.
For the most part, Oaktree will remain the sole supervisor all Inter operations.
