Serie A side Roma have become a vehicle for controversy in the last few days. This is because of the cold war involving Gian Piero Gasperini and Claudio Ranieri.
After the manager questioned a lot of the upper managementโs transfer decisions, the chief advisor countered it on Friday. He made it clear that every signing was approved by Gasperini, who also made his opinion known about players that werenโt signed.
Today, Gasperini was present at a presser ahead of Romaโs upcoming Serie A tie. Corriere dello Sport note how he broke down towards the end, recalling how tense the last week has been and claiming that he has never been a bad person.
He said: โIf I spent almost eight years in Genoa and nine in Bergamo, Iโm not such a bad person.โ
Further describing the atmosphere at Atalanta, he said: โAtalanta wasnโt just about young players or kids. It was a group of experienced players, which was then expanded, integrated, changed. But they werenโt just young players.โ
โThat was an extraordinary thing, not just thanks to me, but also to the club. At a certain point, this club was so capable of working in harmony with the coach. At a certain point, this harmony, partly because the club had changed, partly because my father, to whom I was certainly closest, was no longer there.โ
He also spoke about his discussions with Ranieri, revealing his views about his rant on Friday.
โBecause weโve never discussed things in that tone. Normal discussions.โ
Gasperini left the press conference room crying, appearing rather uncomfortable after a difficult week for him and the club. It is something Serie A has never seen before.
