Serie A side Inter have seen Alessandro Bastoni have a difficult few months ever since 2026 began. Nerazzurri CEO Beppe Marotta has come out in defence of the defender.
Inter took on Roma on Sunday but Bastoni โ as has been the case for weeks, was a topic of discussion. He was sent off during Italyโs loss to Bosnia and this came some weeks after he was criticised in the media for Pierre Kaluluโs sending off against Juventus.
This had forced Bastoni to publicly apologise too, with Barcelona rumours now creeping up slowly.
Marotta spoke to Sky before the Roma game. He described Bastoniโs treatment as a case of lynching.
Hitting back at his detractors, the Italian said โ via TMW: โItโs shameful that heโs been subjected to this constant lynching as if he were guilty of something beyond belief. The origins of Italyโs elimination go back a little further. Beyond that, a boy his age doesnโt deserve this treatment.โ
Marotta said that everyone in Calcio pretends to become an expert, describing Bastoni as someone who is a shining light for the game in Italy.
โMistakes are made in life, but here in Italy weโre all used to having to become psychologists and football experts, analyzing situations without knowing who weโre dealing with. We all acknowledged that he made a mistake, for a boy his age. Bastoni is an asset to Inter and Italian football.
He also made it clear that are no chances of him leaving Inter
โAnd we consider him as such for now, there arenโt the right circumstances or conditions for him to abandon this shirt. As with all players, there may be situations that will be addressed later.โ
