For quite a while, it felt like Marco Palestra would stay in Serie A join Inter from Atalanta. But Chelsea seem to have stolen the march.
Gianluca Di Marzio has reported that Inter are now pessimistic about signing the 21-year-old, even if they were in the driving seat for many days.
Chelsea have offered him double of what Inter put forward (around โฌ5 million a year plus bonuses for five years, compared to โฌ2.5 million from the Nerazzurri) and a formal offer is about to be made to Atalanta.
The player, together with the Bergamo club, will now decide which option is best for his future, but it will be difficult for Inter to maintain the priority of Palestra and Atalanta. In fact, the London club is prepared to offer up to โฌ 55 million in fixed terms plus bonuses.
Inter are now annoyed. They were convinced they had the former Cagliari playerโs preference regarding the technical project, along with the possibility of playing in the Champions League.
However, the figures Chelsea are offering are weighing heavily in their favour, as well as Xabi Alonsoโs intention to make him an important part of the project. The Spaniard has already made it clear that he considers him an important player for his team.
