Napoliโ€™s Aurrelio de Laurentiis under investigation for bankrupty โ€“ hereโ€™s why

Serie A side Napoli have previously been investigated for a capital gains case but it is Aurelio de Laurentiis who is specifically under the microscope now.

Corriere dello Sport go into the reasons behind this, noting that both Aurelio and Luigi De Laurentiis are under investigation by the Bari Prosecutorโ€™s Office, which alleges false corporate disclosures regarding the 2024 financial statements of Bari, and fraudulent bankruptcy related to the request to initiate liquidation proceedings filed for the insolvency of the club.

As part of the investigation, this morning, financial police from the Bari Provincial Command executed a search warrant at the offices of Napoli, the club owned by Aurelio De Laurentiis, and Bari, the club owned by his son Luigi De Laurentiis.

Bari under investigation

This stems from in-depth analysis of Bariโ€™s financial statements, explanatory notes, and management reports, supported by technical consultants. These findings revealed that the club, which is experiencing a loss (approximately โ‚ฌ30 million between 2019 and 2025), is burdened by a significant capital deficit and significant debt exposure, while also lacking a concrete recovery plan.

Caprile transfer under spotlight

The Bari Prosecutorโ€™s Office is investigating the transfer of goalkeeperย Elia Caprile, who first joined Bari from Leeds United and was then sold on to Napoli.

The ongoing searches also concern three sporting directors and a football agent, who are not under investigation but were involved in various capacities in Caprileโ€™s transfer.

According to the Guardia di Finanza, the financial statements of the Bari are believed to have contained facts that are not true, or information that was necessary for a correct assessment of the clubโ€™s financial position and assets was omittedย

Specifically, Bari, after signing Caprile from Leeds and paying premiums related to a potential resale value, resold him to Napoli for โ‚ฌ2.2 million in July 2023. There was no clause regarding earning from a future future capital gain but capital gain actually materialized, as Caprile was subsequently sold to Cagliari for approximately โ‚ฌ8 million.
