Young Alessandro Romano has sparkled in the Serie A this season with Cagliari and this is also his first full campaign in the Italian top-flight. Already, he has been handed a senior Italy national team call-up for the upcoming three games.
The midfielder joined Cagliari on an initial loan deal from Roma, having come through the Giallorossi academy. Of Swiss origins, Romano has switched to Italy, having also played in Switzerland in his younger days.
Cagliari have the obligation to buy him permanently and it is clear they have a gem on their hands.
Romano spoke to Rai about the call-up and made it clear he still canโt believe it.
He said โ via CagliariNews24: โIt happened very quickly. I definitely wasnโt expecting such a good start to the season, but I worked hard. Then came the goal, the great start to the season with Cagliari, and then the call-up. I still canโt believe it.โ
Romano also noted that the decision to chose Italy was heartfelt and he has nothing against Switzerland.
โI always played my youth career with Switzerland. Then this unexpected call came, but it was a heartfelt decision. As I said, it wasnโt a choice against Switzerland, but for Italy. I felt it inside me, and I think it was the right decision.โ
He also spoke about his own development over the years.
Saying: โA lot happened between the ages of 18 and 20. I grew a lot, moving from the youth teams to senior football. First at Roma, then at Spezia in Serie B, and now at Cagliari, where Iโm finding consistency. Iโm very happy and I also thank the coach. When you gain experience and play a lot, you grow, and this helps me keep working and improving.โ
Romano has already played close to 500 minutes in the Serie A, scoring once.
