At Viola Park’s Media Centre, newly arrived Fiorentina defender Viery sat through his first press conference as a Fiorentina player.
Among several matters discussed, the 21-year-old Grêmio academy graduate spoke about his preferred positions at the back, showcasing a clear understanding of what he brings to the club.
“I grew up as a full-back until I was 17, then I started playing as a centre-back. I can play in these two positions, as a full-back I’m a little more defensive, as a centre-back I can create more. The important thing for me is to play, I will be ready for what the coach asks me.”
When it came to inspirations, the conversation took a few turns, not just in terms of which player Viery idolised growing up, but also who served as the inspiration for his name.
“My father was a big fan of Christian Vieri, that’s why he gave me this name.”
“I take inspiration from Sergio Ramos and other former Gremio teammates like [Walter] Kanneman. My characteristics are one-on-one in defense, I like to give everything on the pitch and I will do it for Fiorentina too.”
Viery has moved to Florence from Grêmio for €15 million, having signed a five-year contract. A host of clubs – even in the Premier League, were keen on his signature. But Fiorentina acted quickly and met Gremio’s demands and there is every chance the move goes down as a significant coup for Fabio Grosso’s side.
