Why Milan are now considering Rafael Leao’s sale for cut-price fee

AC Milan have significantly shifted their stance regarding the future of Rafael Leão as the club begins to evaluate the possibility of a summer departure.

According to Corriere della Sera (via Calciomercato.com), the Rossoneri are now considering sanctioning a sale for a figure in the region of €50 million, marking a major departure from their previous valuation of the Portuguese winger.

Notably, several internal factors have contributed to this cooling of relations. A primary concern is the increasingly fractured relationship between Leão and manager Max Allegri, a dynamic that has reportedly worsened in recent months. A

Furthermore, the club is growing uneasy regarding the 26-year-old’s ongoing fitness struggles, which have limited his impact during the current campaign. Consequently, contract renewal negotiations have hit a complete standstill, with the obstacles described as being primarily technical rather than purely financial.

Indeed, the economic weight of the player is also playing a decisive role in the club’s reflections. Leão remains the highest-paid player in the Milan squad, and the hierarchy is mindful of the €21 million penalty previously paid to Lille to settle the legal dispute surrounding his original transfer. By entertaining a sale now, Milan believe they can still secure a vital capital gain on their balance sheet before his market value potentially diminishes further due to his contract situation and physical reliability.

Consequently, what once seemed like an unbreakable bond between the player and the Rossoneri appears to be reaching its conclusion. While Milan were previously intent on building the team around the winger, the combination of dressing room friction and financial pragmatism has opened the door for a high-profile exit in the upcoming window.
