Benevento president Vigorito on blocking promotions: “How can I accept that Brescia stays in Serie A with 16 points but Benevento stays in Serie B with 69?”

Speaking to Corriere dello Sport, Benevento president Oreste Vigorito has criticised those putting forward a scenario where, should Italian football be stopped again, no promotions or relegations will take place. The team, managed by former Milan striker Pippo Inzaghi, is currently twenty points clear at the top of Serie B.

“Three months ago I was very clear, Benevento is ready to accept any decision so long as that be within the interests of football. But if it’s a lobby that prevails, the same one that is making the season restart difficult, I see negative consequences.”

“The only criteria I recognise is sporting merit, what we show on the pitch. Our efforts have not only been economic, but technical, and have lead to results that everyone can see, and now I’m hearing talk of blocking relegations and promotions. How can I accept that Brescia stays in Serie A with 16 points but Benevento stay in Serie B with 69 – two and half points per game, potentially 100 points? What are we talking about here? Covid-19 is lived by some as a tragedy, but by others as an opportunity, I find this unacceptable.”
