Chris Smalling could return to Manchester United in August before Europa League restart

Corriere dello Sport report today that Roma’s efforts to keep hold of Chris Smalling until the end of the season could hit a stumbling block, as a result of a potential conflict of interest should they come up against the defender’s parent club in the Europa League.

The club is also looking to extend the player’s loan for an additional year – with an obligation to buy at the end of next season. With limited investment expected at Roma for the upcoming transfer window, the priorities will be to keep hold of Smalling and Henrikh Mkhtaryan, two players who have impressed in their loan spells in the capital.
