Pirlo reacts to Juventus defeat to Benevento: “We were frantic and got so much wrong.”

Speaking to Sky Sport after Juventus’ home defeat to Benevento this afternoon, Andrea Pirlo gave a frank assessment of his side’s performance, nevertheless insisting that top spot remains the objective.

The visitors took the lead in the second half after Argentinian striker Adolfo Gaich pounced on a wayward pass from midfielder Arthur to open the scoring, in what was an error-strewn match from the Bianconeri

“There wasn’t too much pressure, just the duty to do play better than that, which was awful in every way – both in the attitude and in the technical moments. Benevento are an organised team that defend well. We were frantic and got so much wrong.”

“We have to keep believing [for the Scudetto], our objective doesn’t change but it’s the mentality that should. The shirt we wear is a heavy one and should always be honoured.”

“We knew we were facing a squad that force you to play badly, but this wasn’t the type of performance we needed to have – we had a concrete opportunity to close the gap in the table and we didn’t manage to take it.”

“Arthur made an uncharacteristic error, maybe he didn’t see the opponent but it was easier to pass it  back to the goalkeeper. It was a careless error, as with many we committed today. It means we weren’t concentrated and we weren’t looking to win at all costs.”
