De Zerbi’s Shakhtar Donetsk locked in hotel amidst Russia-Ukraine political situation

Roberto de Zerbi’s Shakhtar Donetsk side is currently locked in a hotel amidst the political situation involving Russia and Ukraine.

Gianluca di Marzio has reported that ex-Sassuolo boss De Zerbi and the Shakhtar’s players and staff are locked inside a hotel, with all flights from Ukraine blocked. The players and members of the staff are figuring out what to do.

The league in Ukraine has been officially suspended and that has been confirmed by the league already in a statement earlier today. Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine earlier this morning, with Shakhtar Donetsk tweeting: “We will stand” while also posting a Ukrainian flag.

De Zerbi joined Shakhtar last summer after an impressive spell at Sassuolo and they have been knocked out of European competition already.
