Dries Mertens ready to take a pay cut to stay at Napoli

Napoli superstar Dries Mertens‘ contract in Naples expired in June 2022, but the player wants to extend his stay with the Partenopei.

According to a report from Gianluca Di Marzio, Dries Mertens is ready to take a massive pay cut of around €500 thousand per season to rejoin Napoli. The player is now a free agent and is considering his next move in the transfer market.

Several clubs have reportedly shown interest in signing him, but Mertens has already turned down all offers. His preference is to continue his career in Italy and especially with Napoli.

While the player wants to stay at Napoli at all costs, it is unknown whether the salary cut will be enough for Napoli to offer the 35-year-old a new contract. On the other hand, he has also been tipped to make a summer transfer to his homeland club Antwerp.

Mertens joined the Italian club back in 2013. And during his nine-year spell in Naples, the veteran scored 148 goals from 397 appearances, becoming the all-time leading goalscorer at Napoli.
