Dries Mertens close to Napoli exit

Napoli veteran Dries Mertens is heading close to heading out of the exit door at the Partenopei.

Il Mattino have reported about the situation of Mertens, who was said to be have talks with the club over a new deal. His current deal expires this summer but there is no agreement with the club for a contract.

The outlet claims that contract talks have now frozen and the Belgian is now heading towards a farewell from the club. His entourage asked for a wage of €4 million per season, something which Napoli cannot pay right now. The player is not looking to give the club a discount for the new deal.

While there is still a little margin for the situation to change in the next few days but the room for negotiation has been lowered considerably. As a result, it now seems likely that the player departs the Armando Maradona Stadium for free in the same window as they are losing Lorenzo Insigne, who joins Toronto FC.
