Charting Juventus’ record against German clubs after Freiburg draw

Juventus must book a trip to Germany in March as they were drawn against Bundesliga side Freiburg in Europa League’s last 16.

The first leg will be played in Turin on March 9th with the second leg to be played in Freiburg at Europa-Park Stadion a week after on March 16th.

Juventus overall have a positive record against German teams: in 49 matches across all European competitions, the Bianconeri have collected 20 wins with 13 draws and 16 losses.

If you take into consideration only Europa League games, the balance is still good as Juventus have picked up 12 wins in 18 games with just two losses.

The last clash against a Bundesliga’s side came in the 2019/20 season when Juventus, then coached by Maurizio Sarri, won both games against Bayer Leverkusen during Champions League’s group stage.

They did not play against a German team in Europa League/UEFA Cup till the 1994/95 season when they beat Borussia Dortmund in semifinal before then losing against Parma in the final.

Freiburg will be Juventus’ 15th different German team in European competitions.

In the previous four cases that Juventus have faced a German team at the last 16 stage of any European competition, they’ve been eliminated twice, including the last duel against Bayern Munich in the 2015/16 season.
