FIGC president Gabriele Gravina demands FIFA intervention into Saudi Arabia

FIGC president Gabriele Gravina has stated his belief about the fact that there should be an intervention into Saudi Arabiaโ€™s newfound dominance in the football transfersโ€™ market.

Italy have recently put forward their joint candidacy for the Euros in 2032 and Gravina was speaking at the presentation of Calcio Report 2023ย and the FIGC president gave his views about a host of issues around Italian football and the sport in general.

He gave his views about hosting the Euros in 2032 with Turkey and stated: โ€œAt a time when the timing linked to our bureaucratic rules and also some interventions by our stakeholders had times that were not in line with those required by UEFA for the candidacy which must be finalized by 10 October, we have decided to make an agreement with Turkey which I considerย important from a cultural point of view and places us in a Mediterranean development area with a great power like Turkey.โ€

There has been talk about modernisation of stadiums in Serie A, amidst struggles faced by multiple clubs about the inability to build new stadiums. Gravina spoke about it.

โ€œWe present ourselves today with 3 stadiums that can compete: Milan, Turin, Rome.ย Florence is leaving, Bologna too, Cagliari wants to leave, Bari is ready.ย We areย all at the starting line.ย An incredible advantage that we bring home is that we donโ€™t have to present the final project with related resources on October 10, 2023, but we have asked and hope to obtain the possibility of indicating the cities that will have to host the tenders by October 2026.โ€

With clubs in Saudi Arabia having poached players from Europe and from the Serie A, Gravina described the situation as something which warrants attention from FIFA as the money from the Middle East is bringing about an imbalance in the game.

โ€œWith Saudi Arabia we are in the area of โ€‹โ€‹competence of Fifa and I think it is right that it begins to identify a method for a whole series of interventions that no longer respond to the logic of the market but to the logic of support and support through the use of state funds; a state which, among other things, has the availability of finance, this evidently generates an alteration. Today we still have time for a partially remedy, but we must run to the allotments otherwise we will run the risk of having an absolute imbalance towards some countries with deflagration after 2030 with the return of these samples.โ€
